northport :: potiger

This weekend I went down to Tuscaloosa, home of UandA, with my mom and sister. Kathleen will be transfering next year there. Anyway, we visited the quaint town of Northport that sits next to Tuscaloosa and it was just about one the cutest little towns I have ever seen.

We came across a french antique store, I could of stayed there for a long time...

baskets full of vintage french postcards

They had rows and rows of documents like this.

These are herb knives.

There was a cute bakery in the town as well
and we enjoyed a snack after shopping.

strawberry cake

This is about the best strawberry cake I have ever had. It is so pretty too.
The recipe is from Southern Living's Homestyle cookbook
and my mom made some edits to it.

the weather in NYC is miserable today. it is grey and cold and windy (great procrastinating weather). but this morning at the flower market i picked up a little bundle of spring. my cute little hellebores have managed to brighten up my day...

i started playing around with them and i put them in a great jar that kyo just dropped off for her wedding in a couple of weeks. i kinda like them in there.

house industries photolettering

House Industries new photolettering program is really cool...for $7 ($2 with a subscription) you can get up to 40 characters set in one of their unique alphabet styles...this is great when you don't want to purchase a font because you would probably only use it once...check it out here...

design sponge contest :: rose watercolor study

One weekend a month, my husband and I have date weekend. The weekend is devoted to us slowing down and spending quality time together. This past weekend was our date weekend and on Saturday we spent the afternoon at the Birmingham Botanical Gardens in the rose garden. The weather was wonderful and a little breezy, perfect for relaxing on my grandmothers quilt. I brought my watercolors and Charlton read and played some chess and we enjoyed the wonderful weather.

I just love how the blooms on roses form, all bundled up and opening to the world. I wanted to try and capture this in my watercolors. Not sure I completely succeeded but I think I got a good start and I plan on working on this much more this spring. I have cropped some of my favorites below from my study.

P.S. How perfect that I did these last weekend, so when i discovered the contest this week, I thought, that will be perfect to enter.
